CREATING A SENSITIVE PRACTICE

Sooner or later we are drawn to a breathing practice in its own right. It helps in the first instance to discover and hold space for the natural procedure of breathing and its way of connecting the very cells and processes of our body to our inner and outer worlds of experience. Then, from this place of witnessing an unforced relationship with the breath, we can proceed to co-create intentional dynamics through explorations into rhythm, pace and technique.

We recommend a slow, steady start to creating a breathing practice, and a slow steady pace to evolving it, and we'll be your accountability buddy throughout the course.

  • Explore the experiential anatomy & physiology of breathing from external breath to  the inner world of cellular respiration, and bandhas.

  • Revisit pranic anatomy concepts and locate pranayama in its context to yoga practice as a whole through textual referencing.

  • Familiarise and trouble shoot by practicing together.

  • Practice ratio breath shapes, sounding breaths, and alternate nostril techniques.

  • With sensitivity, build a sustainable practice that works for your right now

While this is a stand alone course for teachers and non-teaching practitioners, it also forms part of our 300H teacher training programme.

COURSE CONTENT

The course runs in two parts in a termly format. You can join in September on Thursday evenings, or from January on Thursday afternoons.

PART 1 GETTING STARTED

Content and conversation in Part 1 aim to help you establish a regular practice around simple ratio breathing techniques and sounding breaths. You will explore the anatomy and physiology of breathing experientially through images, information, and movement enquiry. In addition, you will revisit the fundamental concepts of pranic anatomy and situate the place of pranayama within yoga practice through textual referencing.

PART 2 KEEPING GOING

In Part 2, you will explore how your self-practice might evolve through an experiential examination of the bandhas (with reference to muscles, fasica and the nervous system). In addition, you will examine various alternate nostril breathing techniques. Further textual referencing will be made.

COURSE DATES

Part 1 and Part 2 of the course run over 12 Zoom sessions. Exact dates will be provided to you on receipt of your application. All sessions are recorded, if you happen to miss one.

Who is this course suitable for? 

This course if for teachers and non-teaching practitioners who have had trouble creating or sustaining a breathing practice.

 

STUDY

& MATERIALS

There is a total of 18 hours of online live sessions spread over 12 weeks (approx). Each live session lasts 1.5 hours. In addition, you will need to allow time for pre-session reading and post-session follow-up as well as keeping a practice diary, perhaps a further 1-2 hours for each session.

MATERIALS

  • Downloadable PDF materials will be provided for pre-course reading, pre-session preparation notes, and post-session follow up. A journaling template is also available.

  • You will need access to a computer, (printer, if you like hard copy materials) and internet connectivity.

  • You will also need to have access to Zoom for live sessions. Please note these will be recorded in case of absence.

ASSESSMENT

  • A final worksheet to help your capture and retain key information.
