about the course

The way someone moves tells a layered story about how they organise their body, where motion sequences clearly through the tissues and where it seems less clear. Learning to see that story, clearly and without judgement, is one of the most valuable skills a movement professional can develop. WHAT IS THE WEEKEND ABOUT? Movement Observation & Analysis gives you a structured, somatic framework for watching movement: not to diagnose or direct, but in the spirit of seeking understanding. You will begin to sharpen your eye and your body sensing to develop more precision in what you see, the language you choose to describe it, and the professional judgement to apply your observations appropriately — whether you're working with a group class, a one-to-one client, or your own movement practice. Drawn from somatic movement education traditions including IBMT, Body-Mind Centering® and Laban Movement Analysis practices, the weekend is practical, experiential, and immediately applicable to your work. WHAT WILL YOU EXPLORE? – Frameworks for observing posture, breath, and movement quality – Body organisation, spatial relationships, and the qualities of effort and flow – How to observe with precision — and without the filters of assumption or judgement – Descriptive language for movement that stays close to experience – Applying observation in group teaching, one-to-one sessions, and peer feedback – Reflective practice: developing your observational eye over time IS THIS WEEKEND FOR YOU? Movement Observation & Analysis is designed for practitioners working professionally with movement, the body, or both. It is most relevant to: – Yoga, Pilates, and somatic movement teachers – Dance and movement facilitators – Physiotherapists and bodyworkers wanting a more somatic observational lens – Somatic counsellors, coaches, and somatic therapists who work with embodied process The content is professional-application focused. PREPARATION Participants are asked to complete approximately 2–3 hours of pre-course reading, provided in advance via our Google Classroom. PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION This weekend is part of Barefoot Body’s associate programme with ISMETA and counts towards the Barefoot Body SME (Somatic Movement Educator) programme for those who later choose to pursue the full qualification and towards registered Associate Somatic Movement Professional status with ISMETA. DATES: 17-18 October, 10-5pm VENUE: Cambridge FEES: £195 if booked before 31 July, then £240
